Back on the Road

After two months in the air, It's nice to be back on the road again.
I've been working out of town for the past two months - flying back and forth on the weekends making for a very hectic schedule. I love my work and every minute of my time away, but it's good to be home. I'm blessed to be able to live in the best place on earth. Below is a photo along my nice long commute route - miles before I get to the city.

Revenge Run 2

I was out for a ride Saturday and I met up with some of the Revenge Runners coming back a little early for the Easter holiday. They were all on Harleys, (one bagger was painted in a conspicuous snow camo.) They flagged me down to get a look at the Enfield and I was happy to stop. They were heading back to Virginia and couldn't be a nicer bunch of southern folks.

DIY Painting Motorcycle Rims on the Cheap

I'll confess, I'm sort of cheap. And impatient to ride. Last weekend I finally painted my motorcycle rims black. I've been photoshopping it for years and finally got around to it. I'm fully aware that powdercoating is the way to go when painting your bike rims, but, here's a quick way to paint your rims yourself using Appliance Epoxy Paint, without even having to remove the tires. This works for car rims as well.

Step 1. Prep.
Thoroughly clean the rims with a degreaser.
Wet sand the chrome and rinse. Allow to dry.
Mask off the rim using playing cards. (Much better than masking tape). They create a very precise mask and it only takes about 5 minutes.

Step 2. Prep some more.
Flip over the wheel and place on a bucket. Use another deck of cards to mask off the other side of the rim to prevent overspray onto the tire.

Step 3. Primer.
Use a self-etching primer. I used Duplicolor - available at auto parts shops. Let dry, lightly sand, add another coat of primer.

Step 4. Paint.
Use Appliance Epoxy paint by Rust-oleum. I recommend painting one side and flipping it over to paint the other side before the first side dries. To keep from marring the wet paint, I propped the rim up on a small bowl, on top of the bucket. The small bowl fits inside the area I'm not painting.

Step 5. Mount Wheels and Ride.

Ramping up

I was afraid that shooting a video of loading my motorcycle using my new, tri-fold ramp would guarantee an epic fail. I should have shot it, but it would have been a long, boring feature of me sitting on the bike, in the back of the truck, slowly easing it backward, trying not to end up running over myself on the way down. I was surprised to find it amazingly easy. A wide ramp is the key. I bought mine used, but it's made by DeeZee.

Also, my boys are now expertly trained in the arts of changing the oil and installing seat belts in a 1961 Ford pickup. It was a good Saturday.
 

RockerBox Photos

It's not your typical gray-bearded Harley crowd, more of a younger, rockabilly vibe with lots of cafe racers and British influence. Royal Enfield Fury launched at Motorcycle Live

Royal Enfield's first twin exhaust bike since the early 1960's was launched at the Carole Nash Motorcycle Live show at the Birmingham NEC this week. The new flat track inspired Royal Enfield Fury was styled by Royal Enfield's UK distributor, Watsonian Squire, and is based on the fuel-injected Electra.

It is claimed the twin silencers allow the 499cc single cylinder engine to breathe more freely, producing a distinctive exhaust note.

Wide western style bars sit on a specially made billet aluminium top yoke. The traditional nacelle is replaced with a chrome headlight and digital instrument panel.

The design team at Watsonian also gave the rear end of the bike a radical makeover, replacing the twin saddle with a flat track style glass fibre seat unit, incorporating a discrete tail light and chrome mini indicators.

The bike will be on sale early next year, the Royal Enfield Fury will sell for £5500 in black and at £5895 in blue and white colour schemes.

Through the Mists of Time

Andy Miller has lived in Weymouth, Dorset on England’s south coast since 1956 when he was 8 years old. He's owned a couple of motorcycles and more than a few scooters, mopeds and motorized bicycles. He collects old photographs of the area usually found in shoeboxes at estate sales and was nice enough to share some of his treasures featuring motorcycles with HMT. 

As Andy puts it, "It always saddens me when I see a box of old snap-shots at a car boot sale or on a market stall. They are all of someone’s relations and ancestors, but through the mists of time their names get forgotten and no one knows who they are."
